Laura Powne

Guest Speaker at Women's Conference 2014

Laura Powne

 “An Officer and a

Gentlewoman”

Born on 29 November 1982 into a Mormon family. at the age of 18 she joined the Navy as a Marine Engineer and began a long journey of training, deployments and Naval life. After reaching the rank of Petty Officer, Laura sat the Admiralty Interview Board and received her Commission in 2008. Laura joined the Navy with a good handful of GCSE’s, and will be leaving with a full Honours Degree in Engineering and chartership status.
Numerous deployments and positions have enabled Laura to see many parts of the world including conflict zones on many different types of warships in some interesting sea conditions! Most recently Laura has been working in the Navy training environment in order to have some shore time – where she trains and coaches the Navy’s new recruits in their first 10 weeks of boot camp.
After spending most of her career as an inactive member of the church, Laura came back to church in 2012 and has since been given a calling as a primary teacher, and a counsellor in Primary (a job she loves!)
Married to Simon, Laura lives in Ilfracombe and is leaving the Navy at the beginning of 2015 to settle down and hopefully start a family.
Laura will be running a session in this year’s Women’s Conference entitled “An Officer and a Gentlewoman” where she hopes to share some of her experiences, explore the complexities of maintaining church activity in a military environment and take the participants through her journey back to church activity. This session promises to be informative and interesting and there will be an open forum for questions and answers.
